ARTISTS STATEMENT:
Having reached the age of 41, I’m fairly certain that I don’t understand my work any better than anyone else. You might think that this would bother me. However, it does not. For a long time now I’ve really tried to make paintings that are almost unconscious. The imagery sort of evolves through some internal process and ends up on the canvas without really being censored or edited in any conscious way. I’ve always been drawn to things that seemed to be the honest and unique expression of an individual, that showcase the individuality of their experience and almost accidentally, almost embarrassingly, expose some of the hidden recesses of the mind. I think what I’m trying to do is let the world filter through me and allow my feeble mind to make of it what it will. - Peter Shmelzer, February 2012
