Born to Ojibwa parents on Little Eagle Reserve in north western Ontario, Leo Yerxa is a widely recognized painter, illustrator and author. His work is included in important national collections of art such as the Canada Council Art Bank, Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development’s Indian and Inuit Art Collection and the Thunder Bay Art Gallery.
Yerxa has received numerous awards throughout his career including the Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Award, the Mr. Chirstie’s Book Award and the Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Picture Book Award. In 1996, he received the Governor General’s award for illustration, for his work in Ancient Thunder.
