Artist's Statement: Len Burnstein
Hip Hop Dance 2007 is a series of photographs evolving out of a 40 year fascination with the human form. For many years, Len Burnstein has been photographing people, mostly in developing countries such as Mexico, Cuba, Thailand, Burma (Myanmar) and Morocco. This series is the beginning of a new direction into the athletic, moving human form photographed as to render them more abstract, more visceral, and more dynamic. The images cross over from the human world to the phantom realm. Unlike earlier photographs which place the figure in relationship to the urban streetscape, these images transcend the concrete world into a universe defined by movement, colour and distortion.
