Clive Cretney
For the last ten years Clive Cretney has been exploring the area of alternative photography, specifically platinum and palladium printing, first introduced in the 1870’s. The use of old and modern techniques has opened up a new field of interest that makes it more stimulating for him and engaging for the viewer. His interpretation of modern scenes using these old processes fits well in a space/time continuum. What was once old is now new again and vice-versa. This association is evolving into new projects that reinterpret past observations being updated for a modern world.
Clive switches easily between his two favorite subjects, the portrait and the landscape. For him, the photograph must have a quality that engages the viewer and conveys a certain mystery that hopefully persists over time. Old or new, the final communicative content will be expressed by the image and its message as it is filtered both through the maker and its viewer.
Clive Cretney has worked for over 25 years in various photography mediums. He immigrated to Canada in 1984, eventually settling in Quebec and worked as a commercial photographer for many years. Now employed as a photographer at a national museum, he spends his additional time working on various photographic projects that personally interest him.
