BJ Broekhuizen

Self Portraits. Raw. Brutal. Rough Flesh. Bj’s works here are pure depictions of flesh and fibers / muscles and skin. Japanese inks used to probe the subconscious through visceral illustrations of the inner soul. Exterior as Interior. A series of artworks confronting the reality of being inside modernity.  No fear of taboo or limitations. Sexual. Liquid. Male. Bordering on the demonic: bleeding emotions.
“My work is visionary. Unafraid. When I paint myself I am grappling with the blurred contours of my soul. That’s what I’m showing here – my being, my minutiae, my geographies. Alchemy in flesh”.
BJ Broekhuizen is an emerging artist working from London. He grew up in Cape Town, South Africa from Dutch parentage. Regular travels between Amsterdam and Africa formed a dichotomy in his artistic mind: the rawness of Africa intertwining with the technical prowess of the Dutch art tradition.  He studied at the Cape Peninsula University.  Always an artist his studies focused on fashion illustration. This taught him the intricacies inside the movements and folds of the human form.
Bj’s exhibits in London, most recently at the Art and Mind show at the Brick Lane Gallery. BJ was selected to be included amongst a small group of artists representing new trends in art at the New Artist Fair in Spitalfields London, 2011. Working out of his studio in London other aspects of his work focus on the human bodies, cells, science transformed into art.
