Artist statement:
“I am a landscape artist first and foremost. Working in the Expressionist tradition, I have to feel what I paint. Topography is not a main concern and I rarely work in situ. Impelled by an inner compulsion, often inspired by memories of the fascinating dynamics of land and sky, and sometimes using dramatic photographs as points of departures, I let strong colours and rhythms guide me. My paintings become inner landscapes that express states of mind or emotions, instead of reproducing an external landscape. Bold and tortured natural forms function as symbols for the impact of our ecological footprints on the earth. The same approach determines my work in portraiture. For this exhibition, I will pair landscapes with psychological portraits”. – Arlette Francière
