THE FORBIDDEN EVENING OF SHIBARI

Douglas Kent, author of award-winning “The Better Built Bondage Book” and the forthcoming “Complete SHIBARI” series, would be giving us a glimpse in the very private world of SHIBARI.

Subversive worlds: Playing with Psyche and Sexuality

For most, ‘kinky’ only exists’ in the attic of our minds. Dim light, cob-web covered, creaky floors, forgotten dreams — a dark erotica. Something to be found. Something to be yearned. Something to be taken aback by.
‘Kink’ is another world. A subversive world which knocks at our imaginary door. Probing, touching, tasting, biting, pleading, conceding —

Kenny Lee has been photographing the kink community for just over a year but yet his images are raw, emotional, seductive and authentic. His experience as a professional photographer has provided him with the technical skill to capture startling images. Frustrated with the commerciality of mainstream photography, Lee turned his lens on the kink community. Lee takes kink out of the studio and onto the street in order to expose it in a new light. The resulting images are dark and humbling. They invite the viewer to experience a ‘back alley’ reality — where secrets are shared, bodies explored, fantasies lived out.

Artist Statement

RAW
– In your face, blatant. I’m tired of seeing your basic new-stand porn rag photo spread with flat, light, overly groomed models fluffed and preened. I capture energy and depth, not poses.

DARK
– I know what’s in you. Fetish, kink have always been an interest of mine since I started cruising the T rooms (google it) when I was eleven.

TWISTED
– Not the norm, not pretty. We are animals at the end of the day. I am interested in people who have embraced their sexual edge.

REAL
– It’s out there. People love a loaded gun up their hole. Like this cop I know.

Commentary:
“As I am the long lost dumpster baby of Dawn Davenport I am genetically predisposed to any sort of exhibitionist act and this is how I met Kenny Lee. I was definitely intrigued especially after seeing the twisted ideas Kenny had come up with in the past. He got around to finding out my personal sexual interests, which tend to be deeply rooted in the world of deviance. When he asked what turned my crank I quickly said …. ‘guns, dogs and fighting are what get me hard.’ The thing that I found most impressive about Kenny was his desire to push the envelope and really tak’gunse the risks required to get the beautiful edgy shots that he has become known for. Besides being a photographer who is intrinsically technically proficient he also likes to explore subject matter that give his photos a dark and intense narrative. He has a great ability to form a great report with his models which is important if you want to photograph the subject matter that Kenny explores. I am forever grateful to have had the chance to pose for such a extremely talented, extremely twisted, artist who is such a sweet man to the core”. – Robert Ridgeway, Toronto, 2009
